Frequently Asked Questions
What is a supported internship?
Supported internships are structured work-based learning programs. They are similar to extended work experience placements designed to help young people, typically those with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), develop the skills and experience needed to secure paid employment. These internships are usually offered by employers in partnership with schools, colleges, or specialist organizations. The key feature is the tailored support provided, which may include a job coach or mentor, to assist the intern in adapting to the workplace, building confidence, and gaining practical experience. The aim is to improve employability and ease the transition into the workforce
What are the entry requirements?
The entry requirements for a supported internship can vary depending on the specific program or provider, but typically, they are designed for young people aged 16 to 24 who:
1. Have Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND): Supported internships are often aimed at individuals with disabilities or additional learning needs, though some programs may be open to others facing barriers to employment.
2. Are Ready for Work Experience: The candidate should be at a stage where they can benefit from work-based learning, which might include basic skills like communication, teamwork, and time management. However, they don’t need to have prior work experience.
3. Are Still in Education or Recently Left: Many supported internships are available to students in their final year of secondary school or college, or to young people who have recently left school and are still in need of support to transition into employment.
4. Have an Education, Health, and Care (EHC) Plan (if applicable): In some cases, an EHC plan may be required, particularly for young people with SEND. This is an official document that outlines the support and resources needed to help the individual succeed in education or employment.
5. Commitment to the Program: Interns typically need to be willing to commit to the structure and duration of the program (usually between 6 months to a year), which includes attending the workplace regularly, participating in training sessions, and working with support staff.
Specific programs or employers may have additional requirements or flexibility depending on the nature of the internship and the level of support provided.
Can I start at any time?
Some education providers will allow interns to start at any point. However most programs start in September.
Am I guaranteed a job at the end of the internship?
No, although the aim is to gain paid employment at the end of the internship the employer will still want to ensure the individual is suited to the role. Many do go into part time or full time employment however the employer may need the intern to gain further training or qualifications before offering them a paid work. Sometimes interns are offered an apprenticeship.
Can I setup my own placement with an employer?
Yes you can. If you find an employer willing to take you on the best thing to do is to contact one of the education providers across the county. They will inform you of next steps
