Training, financial support and career advice available to your workforce. 

Some of the benefits of your employees taking a free course or training outside of employment include: 

  • upskilling your existing employees 
  • progressing current employees into higher skilled roles 
  • filling vacancies or skill shortages within your business 

English and Maths Qualifications

Adults who do not already have a level 2 qualification (GCSE grade 4 or equivalent) in English or maths is entitled to fully funded study up to level 2.

Adults can be fully or part-funded to study for ESOL qualifications from entry-level to level 2. ESOL improves English language skills which supports understanding and integration into the workplace.   

Full funding is available to individuals: 

  • in low-wage employment  
  • who are unemployed, looking for work and in receipt of certain benefits.  

Additionally, some eligible learners can have up to 50% of the course cost paid for through a government contribution.

Types of qualifications

Adults aged 19 or over who do not already have a level 3 qualification (equivalent to A levels or an advanced technical diploma) can choose from over 400 free level 3 courses.  Helping them boost their earnings or get a better job. 

The qualifications are also available to unemployed adults or who earn below the National Living Wage annually (currently £20,319), even if they already have a level 3 qualification or higher. 

Qualifications are available in areas such as: accounting and finance, agriculture, building and construction, business management, childcare and early years, digital, engineering, health and social care, hospitality and catering, manufacturing technologies, transportation operations and maintenance, warehousing and distribution and many more.

Higher technical qualifications are new and existing Level 4 and 5 qualifications (such as Higher National Diplomas, Foundation Degrees, Diploma Higher Education) 

The first higher technical qualifications were launched in September 2022 e.g., Network Engineer, Software Developer and Data Analyst.  Health and Science and Construction is available this year, alongside further qualifications in the digital sector, with a full roll-out of 15 occupational sectors by 2025. 

Costs vary depending on the course and provider. 

Truro and Penwith College and City College Plymouth are offering a range of higher technical qualifications including software development, cyber security, construction and sports coaching.
